This emergency clearance is approved for 3 months so that EPA can begin certifying laboratories to perform cryptosporidium testing using methods 1622 and 1623, in order to ensure that utilities that wish to monitor source water prior to the promulgation of the Long Term 2 Surface Treatment Rule will have qualified labs available to analyze their samples. EPA is simultaneously pursuing a normal clearance that will authorize the collection of information for the lab QA program following the expiration of this three month emergency approval. EPA received one comment on this emergency clearance request that raised a number of questions about the details of the QA program. In its follow-up ICR for the program, EPA should respond to these questions.
