Abstract:
This is a request for an extension of approval for the information collection requirement associated with the hydrostatic testing of portable fire extinguishers. Persons performing the test are required to record their name, the date of the test, and the identifier of the extinguisher tested as evidence of completing the test.

Short Statement:
OSHA is requesting an adjustment increase in the burden hours of the information collection requirements in the Standard from 123,180 to 125,952 for a total increase of 2,772 burden hours. The increase is a result of the growth of the estimated number of portable fire extinguishers in the workplace from 9 million to 9,202,500 that would be subject to the requirement that they be hydrostatically tested at intervals of 5 to 12 years. In addition, there is an increase in the cost from $12,240,000 to $16,687,200 for those employers who use an outside source for the testing of portable fire extinguishers. This increase is not only a result of an increase in the number of extinguishers being tested, but also an increase in the average price of the testing from $12.00 to $16.00 per extinguisher.
