CDC is required to submit each data collection request to OMB as a generic IC. In addition to the data collection instrument itself, supplemental materials for each generic IC should include a description of the goals of the study, study design, sampling approach, and data analysis plan. Abstract:
The purposes of this research program are to: 1) identify and understand environmental factors associated with food- and water-borne illness, and 2) identify and understand the strengths and weaknesses of environmental public health regulatory programs. To meet these purposes, this research program involves approximately 20 data collections per year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) can use the information from these data collections to determine effective food and water safety prevention methods and improve environmental public health regulatory programs. Additionally, CDC can disseminate the information learned from the data collections to environmental public health regulatory programs and food and water industries, which can use the information to improve their food and water safety programs. Ultimately, these actions will lead to increased regulatory program effectiveness, increased industry effectiveness, increased food and water safety, and decreased food- and water-borne illness. This food and water safety research program is conducted by the Environmental Health Specialists Network (EHS-Net), a collaborative project of the CDC, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and nine states (California, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, New York, Minnesota, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Tennessee). EHS-Net data collections can involve collecting data from 1) retail food service establishment workers, 2) water system operators, and 3) environmental public health program regulators. EHS-Net data collections support CDC's research agenda goal of "Decreasing health risks from environmental exposures," as food- and water-borne illness are environmental exposure health risks.
