Terms of Clearance:
Clearance is provided for the 2009-2010 NHANES survey as describe in this package with the following provisos: 1) the newly proposed environmental chemical analytes will not be collected until discussions regarding the utility of this data are complete; any changes to the original protocol from those described in the orignal package will be documented in a non-substantive change package. 2) the 'reactions to race module' will not be implemented until the results of the cognitive test data have been provided to OMB and NCHS documents the utility of the instrument. If question changes are required as a result of the testing, they will be documented in a non-substantive change package. 3) So that we do not delay the start of field training for this cycle of NCHS will submit a non-substantive change package to document the minor adjustments made to the protocol and instruments since the original package was submitted. 4) Prior terms of clearance continue with respect to the need to submit packages for methodological testing and substudies.

Abstract:
The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is a continuous nationally representative sample of the civilian, non-institutionalized U.S. population. The survey is unique in that it contains interview, laboratory, and physical examination segments. The examination component is conducted in mobile examination centers that travel to fifteen survey locations each year. NHANES data have been the cornerstone for numerous national health and nutrition policy and surveillance activities. This requests seeks approval for the 2009-2010 survey.

The current approved annual burden hours are 59,864. We are now requesting approval for 49,626 hours, a decrease of 10,238 hours. The decrease in burden is due to the cycling out of selected components, and fewer burden hours for special studies/pretests.
