Abstract:
FEMAs Community Preparedness Division would like to renew a currently approved collection to evaluate the state of preparedness nationally. The Community Preparedness Division analyzes the data collected through this telephone survey of the public to identify progress and gaps in citizen and community preparedness and participation. This information is used by the Community Preparedness Division, and Citizen Corps Councils to tailor awareness and recruitment campaigns, messaging and public information efforts, and strategic planning initiatives to more effectively improve the state of citizen preparedness and participation across the country.

Short Statement:
The burden estimate for completion of the data collection instruments has increase from 20 minutes to 30 minutes (+10 minutes) and the number of responses has decreased from 9,750 to 6,000 (-3,750). Therefore the total annual burden hours will decrease by -247 hours. The additional time is requested to include a an additional set of questions to the survey (Sources of Information Section) related to whether and how the respondent has read, seen or heard of information on disaster preparedness, the motivation from those messages and the actions resulting from receipt of that communication. These questions are needed to support an assessment of FEMA's campaign to increase individual preparedness. Another set of questions related to the accuracy of the respondents understanding of appropriate protective actions related to the accuracy of the respondents understanding of appropriate protective actions specific to two hazards, a tornado and an earthquake.
