Abstract: This information collection supports the President's initiative to create opportunities to advance science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. The NASA Human Exploration Challenge/Great Moonbuggy Race is a vehicular engineering activity that targets both high school and college students. It is designed to connect classroom training to tangible activities that enable practical application of STEM disciplines, cultivate innovative thinking, and embrace teamwork. This event is inspired by the original lunar rover that piloted across the Moon's surface in the early 1970's during the Apollo 15, 16, and 17 missions. Participation is voluntary. (NOTE: An event 'name change' has been underway for several months. NASA recently made a decision to officially change the name of this annual event from the Great Moonbuggy Race to the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge.)

Short Statement: This is an active information collection without previous OMB approval. NASA is implementing processes to (1) increase awareness of the Paperwork Reduction Act throughout the Agency, (2) identify active information collections that trigger the PRA andt were not tracked in the past, and (3) brings those information collections in compliance with the PRA. This submittal is evidence that NASA's current outreach efforts are making a difference. The NASA Human Exploration Challenge (formerly the Great Moonbuggy Race/Rover Challenge) is an engineering challenge designed to engage and stimulate high school and college/university students in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math. NASA collaborates with the private sector to conduct this celebrated annual event. NASA manages the registration process and has taken steps to improve the clarity and comprehensibility of the IC instruments to minimize repondent burden. Respondents now register electronically. Partners from the private sector oversee the actual 'race'/event, determine the winners, and provide the prizes. Federal funds are not used for any of the following: awards, participant team travel, participant lodging and transportation, participant food, participant prizes, participant t-shirts.
