Abstract:
The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) requests clearance to conduct the 2014 Census of Federal, State, and Local Law Enforcement Agencies (Census). Historically, the Census generates an enumeration of all federal and publically funded state and local law enforcement agencies operating in the United States and provides complete personnel counts for the approximately 18,075 law enforcement agencies operating nationally. For the purposes of the Census, a "law enforcement agency" is a publically-funded government entity responsible for enforcing laws, maintaining public order, and promoting public safety. To be within scope of the Census, a law enforcement agency must employ the equivalent of at least one full-time sworn personnel. BJS has conducted the Census regularly since 1992, making the 2014 administration the sixth wave of data in the statistical series.

This is a new collection. The previous Census conducted in 2008 did not include federal agencies and the OMB number assigned to the previous Census is now attached to the LEMAS collection. A new OMB number is needed. The increase in burden includes the addition of 75 federal agencies.
