Abstract:
Through the National Prisoner Statistics Program (NPS), BJS collects annual aggregate counts of prison inmates in the custody and under the jurisdiction of state and federal prisons, as well as the number of inmates admitted to or released from prison. BJS uses the NPS to report each year on the changes to and movement through state and federal prison systems by sentenced offenders. These statistics are part of BJS's core corrections statistics, as they contribute fundamentally to BJS's mission of describing movements of offenders through the criminal justice system.
