Abstract:
The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) requests clearance to conduct a national census of indigent defense systems. The 2013 National Survey of Indigent Defense Systems (NSIDS) will gather nationwide data about the manner by which legal defense services are provided to indigent people accused of a crime for which they may be jailed or imprisoned. The NSIDS is the fourth in a series of statistical collections on indigent defense that BJS has conducted about every 10 years, beginning in the early 1980s. A letter of support has been added to the original documentation that is being sent out to respondents encouraging them to reply to the survey.

The number of burden hours increased from 1,400 hours for the 2007 collection to 4,679 hours for the 2013 NSIDS. There are a variety of reasons for the increase including a greater number of respondents which are described in detail in the supporting statement.
