Abstract:
The Coast Guard collects, stores, and analyzes vessel data transmitted electronically to enhance maritime domain awareness (MDA). Awareness and threat knowledge are critical for securing the maritime domain and the key to preventing adverse events. Data is also used for marine safety and environmental protection purposes.

The change in burden is a PROGRAM CHANGE due to a Coast Guard rulemaking [USCG-2005-21869]. The rulemaking will- • Expand the AIS carriage requirements to more vessels The program change is necessary to enhance Maritime Domain Awareness, an essential element for U.S. maritime security.
