Abstract:
To encourage compliance with the tax laws relating to the mortgage interest deduction, the regulations require the reporting on Form 1098 of points paid on residential mortgage. Only businesses that receive mortgage interest in the course of a trade or business are affected by this reporting requirement.

The information collection requirements under OMB No. 1545-0901, "Form 1098 – Mortgage Interest Statement," have been combined with this ICR in an effort to consolidate the information collections because they are relative to each other. OMB # 1545-0901 will be discontinued. The adjustment of 8,038,699 is the result of this effort.

On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that the collection of information encompassed by this request complies with 5 CFR 1320.9 and the related provisions of 5 CFR 1320.8(b)(3).
