Terms of Clearance: This Emergency ICR is approved with the understanding that within 6 months from the approval date, CDC will complete a 60d and 30d public comment request to support the approval of the ICR ahead of the expiration date. Previous terms also continue: Approved consistent with the understanding that CDC will continue to add language to its website and reports that clearly caveats the interpretation of longitudinal trends due to changes in the number and characteristics of participating hospitals, particularly changes driven by Medicare and State-level reporting. CDC will also update this package to reflect the burden associated with COVID-19 Vaccination Reporting when appropriate.

Abstract: The National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) is a system designed to accumulate, exchange, and integrate relevant information and resources among private and public stakeholders to support local and national efforts to protect patients and promote healthcare safety. Specifically, the data is used to determine the magnitude of various healthcare-associated adverse events and trends in the rates of these events among patients and healthcare workers with similar risks. The data will be used to detect changes in the epidemiology of adverse events resulting from new and current medical therapies and changing risks. This Emergency Revision Request is submitted to add or modify multiple information collection instruments prior to the need to move forward with revised versions in January 2023.

Emergency Justfication: Collection of this information is essential for the continued and uninterrupted operation of the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). NHSN provides facilities, states, regions, and the nation with data necessary to identify problem areas, measure the progress of prevention efforts, and ultimately eliminate healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) nationwide. This Emergency Revision is needed given the fact that healthcare facilities report in NHSN for required programs with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and state mandates. Normal clearance processing time will prevent the program from enabling users to continue with patient safety reporting.
