Terms of Clearance:
On 06/11/24, OMB cleared the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey and Puerto Rico Community Survey for one year with specific Terms of Clearance. The Census Bureau has met those Terms of Clearance and has provided to OMB, through a non-substantive change request, a written plan and timeline for the ACS to comply with the revised Statistical Policy Directive 15’s Federal race and ethnicity data standards. The Census Bureau’s non-substantive change request states, “Based on the Census Bureau’s assessment, feedback from the public, along with feedback from other federal agencies that rely on ACS data, the Census Bureau proposes to begin collecting race and ethnicity data under the new standard beginning with the 2027 ACS.” OMB approves this non-substantive change request. This information collection request is now cleared through 06/2026. Process Note: Due to the non-substantive change request that was required in the 06/11/24 Terms of Clearance, the Census Bureau had to resubmit this information collection request, using its previous 30- and 60-day Federal Register Notices/public comment period.

Abstract:
The American Community Survey (ACS) is an ongoing monthly survey that collects detailed housing and socioeconomic data from a sample of about 3.5 million addresses in the United States and about 36,000 addresses in Puerto Rico each year, where it is known as the Puerto Rico Community Survey (PRCS). The ACS also collects detailed socioeconomic data from a sample of about 170,900 residents living in group quarters (GQ) facilities in the United States and Puerto Rico. Resulting tabulations from this data collection are provided on a yearly basis. The ACS allows the U.S. Census Bureau to provide timely and relevant housing and socioeconomic statistics, even for low levels of geography.
