Abstract:
NHTSA’s mission is to save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce the economic costs of road traffic crashes through education, research, safety standards, and enforcement activity. As vehicle technologies advance, they have the potential to dramatically reduce the loss of life from roadway crashes. However, this potential may not be achieved, and safety may be compromised if drivers do not understand how to safely interact with the systems or do not understand their capabilities and limitations. This research supports NHTSA’s mission by examining how DMS detection and mitigation of driver distraction may be enhanced by integrating external sensors, driver physiological state, and vehicle control data. The conceptual contextual DMS may improve upon traditional systems by comparing the driver’s attention level to the actual driving environment, allowing for proactive hazard warnings when the system detects that the driver is disengaged. The overall objective of this information collection request is to advance the state of knowledge regarding DMS and additional sensors that can enhance the detection and mitigation of driver distraction. NHTSA is authorized to undertake collaborative research and development projects with non-federal entities. This information collection supports the department’s strategic goal of saving lives, preventing injuries, and reducing economic costs from roadway crashes.
