Title: Fisheries in the Western Pacific; Pelagic Fisheries; Purse Seine Prohibited Areas Around Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
Abstract: The Western Pacific Fishery Management Council recommended that U.S. tuna purse seine fishing be prohibited in the U.S. EEZ around the Mariana Islands, including Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), and that pelagic longline fishing be prohibited within 30 nm of the CNMI. Amendment 1 to the Fishery Ecosystem Plan for Pelagic Fisheries of the Western Pacific Region intends to minimize localized stock depletion by the purse seine fishery and to reduce catch competition between the purse seine and small-boat pelagic (e.g., troll and handline) fisheries. Amendment 1 also intends to reduce competition for target species and gear conflicts between small-boat pelagic fisheries and the longline fishery.
