Title: ●Taking Marine Mammals Incidental to U.S. Navy Training Exercises in the Gulf of Alaska Temporary Maritime Activities Area
Abstract: In March, 2009, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) received an application from the U.S. Navy (Navy) for the promulgation of regulations and subsequent issuance of Letters of Authorization (LOAs) to take individuals of 20 species of marine mammals incidental to upcoming Navy training activities to be conducted in the Gulf of Alaska TMAA, over the course of 5 years. These training activities are classified as military readiness activities and may result in the incidental take of marine mammals present within the Gulf of Alaska TMAA by exposing them to sound from mid-frequency or high-frequency active sonar (MFAS/HFAS) or to underwater detonations at levels that NMFS associates with the take of marine mammals.
