| Title: Implementation of a New Trawl Gear Stowage Method | |
| Abstract: This action would implement changes to the regulations governing the on-vessel stowage requirements of trawl gear to ensure the gear is not available for immediate use. The current trawl gear stowage regulations require that trawl gear being stowed on the net reel be covered with a canvas or similar opaque material. The Councils Enforcement Committee has been working with the industry and the United States Coast Guard to develop an alternative to the tarp requirement to improve safety at sea. Through public workshops and at-sea trials, the industry, Coast Guard, and NMFS developed an orange mesh material as a safer alternative to the current tarp requirement. This action allows the use of this orange mesh material as an alternative. | |
