| Title: Interim Action to Implement Gulf of Maine Atlantic Cod Spawning Closures and Other Conservation Measures | |
|
Abstract:
In response to a recent update to Gulf of Maine cod abundance estimates, the New England Fishery Management Council requested that the National Marine Fisheries Service take action to protect this stock. This action implemented seasonal groundfish fishery (commercial and recreational) closures in the Gulf of Maine designed to provide protection for the severely depleted cod stock in that area. The closures were designed to provide both protection for likely spawning aggregations and unimpeded access for cod to move to and from traditional peak spawning areas. |
