Title: ●International Fisheries; Pacific Tuna Fisheries; 2025-2026 Commercial Fishing Restrictions for Pacific Bluefin Tuna in the Eastern Pacific Ocean
Abstract:

Under the Tuna Conventions Act, NMFS intends to propose a rule to implement a Resolution adopted by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) in September 2024. This Resolution establishes commercial Pacific bluefin tuna catch limits for the United States applicable to 2025-2026. Similar catch limits have been in place since 2015, and this Resolution increases the U.S. catch limit. A 2024 International Scientific Committee assessment shows that Pacific bluefin tuna is no longer overfished or experiencing overfishing throughout the Pacific Ocean. The U.S. will also take into consideration feedback from the Pacific Fisheries Management Council and advisory bodies on options for domestic trip limits for Pacific bluefin tuna. U.S. coastal purse seine, hook and line, DGN, and other gears harvest PBF in the EPO. Limits on catch are strongly supported by the environmental community and are expected by domestic commercial fishing interests.
