Title: ●2026 Specifications for the Mackerel, Squid, and Butterfish Fishery Management Plan
Abstract:

NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is proposing this action pursuant to the authorities under sections 303(c), 304(b), and 305(d) of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. NMFS and the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council jointly manage Atlantic mackerel, Illex squid, longfin squid, butterfish, and Atlantic chub mackerel under the Mackerel, Squid, and Butterfish Fishery Management Plan. At its June 2025 meeting, the Council recommended new 2026 and projected 2027-2028 chub mackerel fishery specifications, and recommended reaffirming previously-projected 2026 longfin squid and butterfish fishery specifications. At its August 2025 meeting, the Council recommended new 2026 and projected 2027-2028 Illex squid fishery specifications. This action would implement the Council’s recommended specifications for all four species. This action would also make modifications to several existing regulations in order to delete duplicative text, correct errors, and streamline requirements. Atlantic mackerel specifications would be set through a separate future action.
