| Title: Ingredient Standards and Definitions for Animal Foods | |
| Abstract: The President signed into law the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007 (FDAAA) on September 27, 2007. The FDAAA includes several provisions pertaining to food safety, including the safety of pet food. FDAAA section 1002(a)(1) directs FDA to promulgate regulations within 2 years to establish pet food ingredient standards and definitions. FDA plans to publish a proposed rule to establish standards for certain substances used in animal foods, to define which ingredient names shall be used on animal food labeling, and to add a new collective name for certain feed ingredients. This same provision of the law also directs that, in developing these new regulations, FDA consult with the Association of American Feed Control Officials and other relevant stakeholder groups, including veterinary medical associations, animal health organizations, and pet food manufacturers. | |
