Title: Amendments to Closed-Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus Performance Requirements for Approval of Respiratory Protective Devices
Abstract: NIOSH certifies respirators used in a variety of industrial settings; regulations governing certification are codified in 42 CFR part 84. The "closed-circuit self-contained breathing apparatus" is a type of respirator used by first responders, fire service personnel, mine rescue teams, and military personnel in such applications as HazMat remediation, mine and tunnel rescue, and other security operations. It allows users to enter into atmospheres immediately dangerous to life and health. NIOSH is working to update and improve the standards used to certify such respirators, which are codified under 42 CFR part 84, and intends to publish the proposed standards in a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking.
