| Title: Approval Tests and Standards for Combination Unit Respirators | |
|
Abstract:
Combination unit respirators (CURs) are used today in military, law enforcement, and some industrial settings where the versatility of these devices allows users to perform in various hazardous environments. Regulations in 42 CFR part 84 do not currently allow for National Institute for Safety and Health (NIOSH) approval of a single respirator unit for more than one respirator class where the user can select the appropriate level of protection required from within a single respirator system. With this rulemaking, HHS is amending the Respirator Approval Program regulations in 42 CFR part 84 to add a new subpart P. Subpart P will contain performance standards allowing the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to approve a new class of respiratory protective devices, combination unit respirators, by incorporating by reference to a recently developed National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) consensus standard, NFPA 1987, Standard on Combination Unit Respirator Systems for Tactical and Technical Operations. |
