Title: ●Implementing the Redesigned Disability Process (816P)
Abstract: We propose to implement elements of the redesigned disability claims process that have been tested and found to further redesign goals. Specifically, we propose to revise the disability determination process by: (1) eliminating the reconsideration step of the appeals process; (2) enhancing the roles of the disability examiner and medical/psychological consultant to streamline the process and make more effective use of the doctor's knowledge and expertise; and (3) increasing claimant contact and explanation of the requirements for disability. We propose to implement the redesigned process in phases; the existing process will remain in effect for States that have not yet adopted the redesigned process.
