Title: Timber Sale Contract Modification
Abstract: This rulemaking would expand the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) existing authorities to extend or modify timber sale contracts on BLM-managed public lands. The rule would allow timber sale contracts to be extended or modified during severe declines in the timber market. Currently, timber companies must pay penalties if they do not harvest the timber as called for in their 3-year contracts with the BLM. The proposed change could help timer companies withstand severe market fluctuations with minimal cost to the Federal Government. The U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs already have similar authorities to modify or extend their timber sale contracts.
