Title: Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Reclassifying the StephenÂ’s Kangaroo Rat From Endangered To Threatened
Abstract: We are proposing the reclassification of the Stephen's kangaroo rat, a nocturnal, burrowing, seed-eating rodent found in western Riverside and San Diego Counties, California, from endangered to threatened. A status review indicates that conservation agreements have secured a number of populations in western Riverside County, and we have identified significant populations in San Diego County that were not previously known at the time the species was listed. However, habitat loss and degradation still remain a threat in other parts of the speciesÂ’ range.
