Pursuant to the Endangered Species Act, we are required to designate critical habitat, to the maximum extent prudent and determinable, concurrent with a listing determination for a species. We are developing a listing determination for the Suwannee moccasinshell as a separate rulemaking action (1018-BB09). We will develop a critical habitat designation for the Suwannee moccasinshell, a mussel species endemic to Georgia and Florida. The main threats to this species are sedimentation due to agricultural and silvicultural activities; phosphate mining; industrial pollution and localized municipal pollution; fairly high-density residential development; and watershed development.
