Title: ●Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Horses
Abstract:

The proposed rule would permanently close the core Dyea Historic Townsite to horse traffic. The Dyea Historic Town site is rich in artifacts from the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898 that exist within and above the top layers of soil, and as such, are highly susceptible to damage from ground disturbance. The National Park Service has adopted temporary closures to horses to protect artifacts for the last several years while the NPS completed long-term planning for the area. This rule would implement the 2014 Dyea Area Plan/Environmental Assessment and 2014 Finding of No Significant Impact which calls for permanently closing the historic Dyea Town site to horses except pursuant to an NPS permit that would identify a designated trail. There has already been extensive public outreach with the Dyea Area Plan/Environmental Assessment.
