Title: Forwarding of Asylum Applications to the Department of State 
Abstract: The Department of Justice is planning to amend its regulations to alter the process by which the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) forwards asylum applications to the Department of State (DOS). Currently, EOIR forwards to DOS all Form I-589, Applications for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal (asylum applications) filed with EOIR Immigration Courts. The proposed rule will amend the regulations to permit EOIR to send asylum applications in its discretion to DOS where EOIR believes that DOS may have relevant country conditions information that may assist with the adjudication of the asylum application. This change will increase the efficiency of DOS' review of asylum applications and is consistent with similar changes made by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
