Title: Carbon Dioxide Fire Suppression Systems on Commercial Vessels
Abstract: The Coast Guard proposes to amend the current regulations for carbon dioxide fire suppression systems on commercial vessels. This proposed rule concerns the use of carbon dioxide (CO2) flooding systems to suppress fires on commercial vessels. Once, carbon dioxide systems were the only fire suppression systems that were suitable for certain manned spaces, but the potential lethality of carbon dioxide has always been a concern. In recent years, alternative systems have been developed that are comparable to carbon dioxide fire suppression, but are much safer in the event of an accidental discharge, or a discharge that takes place prematurely, before workers can evacuate the protected space. We would amend existing regulations to clarify that approved alternatives to carbon dioxide systems may be used; add new regulations to set general parameters for those approved alternatives and add a new requirement for lockout valves in manned spaces using carbon dioxide systems.
