| Abstract: The Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996 (Improvement Act) requires the head of each government agency to adjust each civil monetary penalty within their jurisdiction every four years to ensure that the penalties maintain their deterrent effect. This document amends the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) regulations, 8 CFR 280.53 and 8 CFR 1280.53, to adjust for inflation various civil monetary penalties assessed under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The adjusted penalties are calculated according to a statutory formula provided in the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act of 1990 (Adjustment Act). | |
