On September 25, 2023, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers and efficiency and consumer organizations and utilities, submitted a joint letter to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE or the Department) recommending new and amended efficiency standards for various home appliances to the Department for consideration. Subsequently, DOE has received a letter in support of the joint recommendation from the States of California, Massachusetts, and New York. This rulemaking is one of six direct final rules that the Department is considering in response to the proposal.

In this rulemaking, under the authority provided by 42 U.S.C. 6295(p)(4), DOE has issued a proposed rule and a direct final rule amending the energy conservation standards for dishwashers. DOE has determined that the comments received in response to the direct final rule do not provide a reasonable basis for withdrawing the direct final rule. Therefore, DOE published a notice confirming the effective and compliance dates of those standards. That notice also clarifies the introductory notes to the appendices for the dishwasher test procedure to conform with the amended standards promulgated by direct final rule published on April 24, 2024. The notice also corrects an error in the amended regulatory text as it appeared in the direct final rule published on April 24, 2024.
