EPA/OLEM RIN: 2050-AH39 Publication ID: Spring 2025
Title: ●Hazardous and Solid Waste Management System: Disposal of Coal Combustion Residuals from Electric Utilities; Legacy/ Coal Combustion Residuals Management Units
Abstract:

On May 8, 2024, EPA published the Legacy CCR Surface Impoundments” rule (Legacy Rule). The final rule went into effect November 8, 2024. This rule establishes requirements for the safe disposal of CCR in a new type of regulated CCR unit - legacy surface impoundments (Sis). It also establishes requirements for CCR management units” (CCRMU) to address the risks from previously unregulated solid waste management of CCR that involves the direct placement of CCR on the land at CCR facilities. This rule would address needed corrections, consider alternative methods of closure, and consider other possible changes to the Legacy Rule.
