| Title: Revisions to Motor Vehicle Fuel Economy Label | |
| Abstract: EPA is responsible for developing the fuel economy labels that are posted on window stickers of all new light duty cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 imposed several new labeling requirements on NHTSA and EPA, including introducing environmental metrics on vehicle labels. Additionally, increasing market penetration of advanced technology vehicles, such as electric, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and fuel cell vehicles, will require new metrics to effectively convey information to consumers. EPA and NHTSA are thus jointly developing new labeling requirements, which will help consumers to make more informed vehicle purchase decisions, particularly as the future automotive marketplace provides more diverse vehicle technology choices for consumers. These new label requirements do not affect the methodologies used by EPA to generate consumer fuel economy estimates, nor automaker compliance values for NHTSA's corporate average fuel economy and EPA's greenhouse gas emissions standards. | |
