| Title: Coast Guard Vessel Inspection User Fees (CGD 96-067) | |
| Abstract: This project implements the Congressional mandate, contained in the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 1996 (Pub. L. 104-324) to cap fees that may be charged for the inspection or examination of small passenger vessels, and to exempt publicly owned ferries from vessel inspection user fees. The Act limits annual fees for small passenger vessels less than 65 feet in length to not more than $300, and for small passenger vessels 65 feet or over in length to not more than $600. Fees for vessels in these categories currently range from $450 to $2,585 depending on the length and capacity of the vessel. This rule reduces published fees to the levels established under the caps imposed by the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 1996. This rule also exempts publicly-owned ferries from vessel inspection user fees. Additional revisions to the exemption criteria will expand exemptions in certain instances where it is clearly within the public interest to do so, but which are not included under current regulation. | |
