| Title: Electrical and Electronic System Lightning Protection | |
| Abstract: This rulemaking would establish uniform lightning protection for electrical and electronic systems, based on the consequences of system function failure. This action is necessary because aircraft are increasingly equipped with flight-critical systems, and use composite airframe structures that provide less protection than traditional aluminum. The intended effect is to establish two levels of protection: (1) for those failures that would prevent continued safe flight and landing; (2) for those failures that would reduce the aircraft's or the flightcrew's capability to respond to adverse conditions. Finally, it would harmonize FAA regulations with European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). | |
