Title: Mechanic Certification: Inspection Rating and Recent Experience Requirements
Abstract:

This proposal would amend the regulations for certificated mechanics by removing the current inspection authorization (IA). In place of the IA, a new inspection rating (IR) would be introduced and added to the mechanic certificate, similar to the existing airframe and powerplant ratings. The IR would carry the same privileges and limitations as the IA, but without an expiration date or renewal requirement. Instead, annual activity requirements would be established to maintain the rating's currency. The activity requirements would mirror the activities that are currently in place for IA holders to be eligible for renewal, ensuring there is no added risk to the National Airspace System. These proposed changes are designed to reduce on-demand work tasks, save critical man-hours for safety-focused missions, and significantly cut operational costs. This proposal is primarily administrative and does not affect the privileges or limitations of the mechanic certificate.
