Currently U.S. military pilots who hold a military medical certificate are not required to also hold an FAA third-class medical certificate when operating civilian aircraft within U.S. airspace on flights that do not require higher than a third-class medical certificate. The same does not hold true for U.S. military pilot trainees, including those who receive training at FAA-certificated part 141 pilot schools and provisional pilot schools. This is true even though those persons are required to hold a military medical clearance from their respective branches of the U.S. Armed Services to participate in this flight training a clearance that is equivalent to or exceeds the requirements of an FAA third-class medical certificate. This rule would relieve this requirement, thereby streamlining the U.S. military’s use of civilian flight schools for initial pilot training.
