Title: ●Modernizing Medical Standards For Certain Low-Risk Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Cases
Abstract:

This rulemaking would amend existing regulations to remove a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus that can be treated with a hypoglycemic drug other than insulin from the list of specifically disqualifying medical conditions for first-class, second-class, and third-class airman medical certificates. Medical advancements developed since the introduction of current regulations have substantially improved the management of diabetes, resulting in a marked reduction in severe complications, including hypoglycemia and other adverse outcomes. This rulemaking would eliminate the need for FAA to use the time-consuming, resource-intensive Special Issuance process for medical certifications in these cases.
