Title: ●Response to Petitions for Reconsideration of Side Impact Protection Final Rule--FMVSS No. 214
Abstract: This rulemaking would respond to petitions for reconsideration by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers regarding the March 2010 final rule and also corrects errors in the rule. The agency previously published a FMVSS No. 214, (part 1) final rule on June 9, 2008 (73 FR 32473) responding to petitions on lead time, phase-in schedules and other time-sensitive matters that needed to be resolved or clarified. In addition the agency published another final rule (part 2) on March 15, 2010 (75 FR 12123), responding to detailed technical issues on dummy positioning, test procedure issues, effective date for convertibles in the MDB test, pelvic injury criterion for the SID-IIs dummy, and exclusion requests for vehicles built in more than 1 stage. The agency is completing its response to petitions for reconsideration on the September 11, 2007 FMVSS No. 214, ?Side impact protection,? final rule. This final rule would clarify the following: fore-aft position of the non-struck side front seat, head restraint adjustment and test dummy head position. It also would correct an error in the identification of a reference mark for test dummy hip positioning.
