The standard identified in this RIN assumes a human driver and references the location of a human driver for compliance with the standard. This update will address the applicability of the standard for vehicles equipped with automated driving systems (ADS) that lack manually operated driving controls. The updates will be developed to maintain the level of safety performance required by the standard. This RIN will update the tire selection standard (FMVSS No. 110) placard location requirement to enable applicability to ADS-equipped vehicles without a designated driver’s position and enable placement on the left side, or other practicable location.
