| Title: ●Unlicensed Use of the 6 GHz Band;(ET Docket No. 18-295) | |
|
Abstract:
In this document, the Commission is authorizing two types of unlicensed operations in the 6 GHz band. First , we authorize unlicensed standard-power access points in the U-NII-5 and U-NII-7 bands through use of an AFC (Automated Frequency Control) system. This will permit operations at the same power levels already permitted in the 5 GHz U-NII-1 and U-NII-3 bands (5.150-5.250 GHz and 5.725-5.850 GHz bands, respectively), enabling synergistic use of both the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands for promoting unlicensed broadband deployment. Second , we are opening the entire 6 GHz band for unlicensed indoor low power access points. By authorizing use of the entire 6 GHz band for this type of use, we provide opportunities for unlicensed operations to use up to 320-megahertz channels to expand capacity and performance capabilities. This forward-looking action anticipates the next generation of unlicensed devices and advances the U.S.’s role as an innovator and global spectrum policy leader. Client devices communicate using power levels that depend on the type of access point - either the standard-power or the indoor low-power access point to which they are connected. In this Further Notice, the Commission seeks comment on two options for further expanding unlicensed operations without the use of an AFC. First, we propose to authorize operations that are not limited to indoor use and, thus, must be very low power to protect incumbents. Second, we seek comment on increasing the power spectral density EIRP for low-power indoor operations from 5 dBm/MHz to 8 dBm/MHz. In addition, we seek comment on permitting mobile AFC controlled standard-power access point operation and on whether to allow higher power levels for AFC controlled standard power access points used in fixed point-to-point applications. |
