Title: Rule Governing Disclosure of Written Consumer Product Warranty Terms and Conditions
Abstract:

Rule 701 (or Rule Governing Disclosure of Written Consumer Product Warranty Terms and Conditions) establishes requirements for warrantors for disclosing the terms and conditions of written warranties on consumer products actually costing the consumer more than $15.00. Rule 701 specifies the information that must appear in the written warranty, as well as the exact language that must be used for certain disclosures. Under Rule 701, the information must be disclosed in simple, easily understood, and concise language in a single document.

The E-Warranty Act of 2015, which was signed into law on September 24, 2015, permits, but does not compel, manufacturers to direct consumers to their Web sites to find the terms and conditions of their consumer warranties. On September 15, 2016, the FTC issued a final rule making conforming and technological amendments to Rule 701. 81 FR 63664. The final rule was effective on October 17, 2016.
