Title: Low-Speed Vehicles
Abstract: The agency established a new category of motor vehicle called "low-speed vehicle." A low-speed vehicle (LSV) is any 4-wheeled motor vehicle, other than a truck, whose top speed is more than 20 but does not exceed 25 mph. Under this new standard, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 500, LSVs will be equipped with certain basic items of motor vehicle safety equipment, such as seat belts, in lieu of complying with the Federal motor vehicle safety and bumper standards that would apply if LSVs were categorized according to existing vehicle types.
