Title: ●Commercial Driver Physical Fitness as Part of the CDL Process
Abstract: The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is proposing to include the certification of fitness to operate a CMV in the commercial driver's license (CDL) process. Incorporating the commercial driver fitness determination into State--administered CDL procedures could allow elimination of the requirement that CMV drivers carry a separate medical certificate. The CDL would be evidence that the CMV driver is physically fit as well as operationally qualified to operate CMVs safely. This action addresses the driver's physical qualifications as they relate to the CDL process; it does not address whether those standards are correct or should be changed. This action is significant due to anticipated substantial public interest.
