Title: Asbestos Exposure Limit
Abstract: Overexposure to asbestos causes mesothelioma and other forms of cancers such as cancers of the digestive system. MSHA's asbestos standard is 20 years old. Recent scientific data indicate that the existing permissible exposure limit (PEL) is not protective of miners' health. MSHA is considering rulemaking to lower the asbestos PEL because miners are at risk of developing asbestos-induced occupational lung disease.
