Abstract: This rulemaking would propose changes to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) to clarify the definition of "Standard Statements" in the MUTCD and to clarify the use of engineering judgment and studies in the application of traffic control devices.

Includes Retrospective Review under Executive Order 13563: Actual or Target Completion Date - The FHWA estimates that the final rule will be published in August 2012. Anticipated savings in costs and/or information collection burdens, together with any anticipated changes in benefits - The FHWA plans to revise certain standards, guidance, options, and supporting information relating to traffic control devices in part 1 (General) of the MUTCD. The proposed changes are intended to provide necessary flexibility and to clarify both the definition of Standard statements in the MUTCD and the use of engineering judgment and studies in the application of traffic control devices. Progress updates and anticipated accomplishments - The NPRM was published on August 2, 2011, at 76 FR 46214, and the comment period closed on October 3, 2011. The FHWA estimates that a final rule will be published in August 2012. Notes - None.
