Title: ●Squid Capacity Amendment | |
Abstract:
This amendment was initiated to reduce latent effort in the longfin and Illex squid fisheries and adjust the management of the longfin squid fishery during Trimester 2 (May through August). The objectives of this action are to remove unused or minimally used squid permits and to reduce the potential for excessive fishing effort on inshore spawning aggregations and associated impacts to squid egg mops during Trimester 2. The Squid Amendment would: 1) reissue longfin/butterfish moratorium permits to recently active vessels; 2) separate butterfish from the current longfin/butterfish moratorium permit to create a new butterfish moratorium permit; 3) create two new limited access longfin permits with reduced trip limits for less active vessels; 4) allow permit holders to swap requalified longfin moratorium permits among their vessels; and 5) reduce the longfin possession limit for incidental permits and after the Trimester 2 quota is caught. |
