Title: Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Technical Correction of Taxonomy and Nomenclature for the Orangutan
Abstract:

We will make a taxonomic change for the orangutan. The orangutan was originally listed as a single entity under the Endangered Species Act: Pongo pygmaeus, which included orangutans from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. However, the orangutan is currently found only in northern Sumatra (Indonesia) and Borneo (Indonesia and Malaysia). Since the original listing, taxonomic reviews by the scientific community support Pongo abelii in Sumatra (Indonesia) as being a separate species from Pongo pygmaeus in Borneo (Indonesia and Malaysia). Because both species are considered part of the original listed entity, the revised taxonomy does not change the endangered status of either species. The taxonomic corrections involve no substantive changes to the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife, or to any applicable regulations.
