Title: ●Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Reclassifying the Morro Shoulderband Snail from Endangered to Threatened With Taxonomic Revision | |
Abstract:
The banded dune snail (originally classified as Helminthoglypta walkeriana) was listed as endangered in 1994. At the time, it was considered to be a single species composed of two subspecific taxa: H. w. walkeriana and H. w. morroensis, the latter of which was thought to be extinct. These two subspecific taxa are now recognized as full species: H. walkeriana (Morro shoulderband snail) and H. morroensis (Chorro shoulderband snail). Additionally, the Chorro shoulderband was rediscovered shortly after listing. A 2006 review of the species noted that many of the threats at the time of listing had been reduced and that populations were stable or increasing. The Chorro shoulderband snail appeared to be relatively abundant in several locations throughout its range. The review recommended that Morro shoulderband snail be downlisted to threatened and that Chorro shoulderband snail be delisted. We are currently conducting a status review for each of these species to consider new information and assess any changes since the 2006 review and provide an updated analysis for any proposed status change. |
